Der Däne sichert sich beim NASCAR GP von Großbritannien den zweiten Platz
Sørensen hat in der ELITE 2 Division in Brands Hatch eine dominante Vorstellung abgeliefert. Der Däne kämpfte sich beim American SpeedFest in der Endphase an Andre Castro vorbei und holte sich auf dem 1,9 Kilometer langen Indy-Kurs in Runde sechs seinen zweiten Sieg in Folge. Der Dexwet-df1 Racing Fahrer krönte sich zum “Prinzen von Brands Hatch”.
Im ersten ELITE 2 Rennen am Samstag war er noch vom letzten Platz auf Rang eins gefahren. In seinem Chevrolet Camaro mit der Startnummer 66 zeigte er auch am Sonntag eine starke Leistung. Der Rennfahrer aus Aalborg startete von Platz fünf und gewann den 30 Runden langen Kampf vor den tausenden Zuschauern gegen vier andere Kontrahenten. Sörensen kam in der vorletzten Runde mit einem NASCAR-style Manöver an Andre Castro vorbei. Es war der dritte Karrieresieg des Dänen in der NASCAR Whelen Euro Series. Dexwet-df1 Racing rund um Teamchef Norbert Walchhofer wurde als bestes Team beim NASCAR GP von Großbritannien ausgezeichnet.
“Es war einfach unglaublich”, sagt Sörensen. “Nach dem Qualifying habe ich nicht einmal davon geträumt, hier zweimal zu gewinnen. Ich danke allen Mechanikern und Helfern bei Dexwet-df1 Racing sowie meinem Sponsor flexlease.nu. Sie haben diesen Sieg möglich gemacht. Ich bin gegen Andre einfach reingestochen, weil das meine einzige Chance war. Sie haben mir hier vorher gesagt: ‘Rubbing is racing!’ Ein kleiner, fairer Kontakt ist völlig in Ordnung und das ist, was ich an dieser Meisterschaft so liebe.”
Der Traum vom ersten ELITE 2 Sieg platzte für Andre Castro wieder in der Endphase. Der Amerikaner wurde zum dritten Mal in der NWES Saison 2019 Zweiter. Nachdem er einen Gang in den Druids verpasst hatte, hatte er keine Chance mehr, sich in der Graham Hill Bend gegen Sörensen zu verteidigen.
“Bisher liefen alle Wochenenden so”, so Castro. “Am Samstag landen wir nicht auf den Toppositionen und am Sonntag wird es dann der zweite Platz. Es wird zur Routine. Ich habe einige starke Überholmanöver gezeigt. Im Kampf um Position eins gab es einen Kontakt, aber das war absolut fair. Ich freue mich über den zweiten Platz hier in Brands Hatch.”
Giorgio Maggi sicherte sich sein viertes Top-5-Ergebnis und drittes Podium in der Saison 2019. Der Schweizer war in der ersten Rennhalbzeit Dritter, verlor dann aber einige Positionen wegen eines Fehlers in der Paddock Hill Bend. Der Hendriks Motorsport Fahrer ist wieder an der Spitze der ELITE 2 Meisterschaftswertung. Die Rookie Trophy spiegelte genau das Gesamtpodium wider.
“Es war ein hartes Rennen”, sagt Maggi. “Es ist so schwierig, hier Positionen zurückzubekommen. Ich bin glücklich, die Meisterschaft weiter anzuführen. Das Rennen hat großen Spaß gemacht. Jetzt freue ich mich auf Most, eine sehr technische aber auch groovige Strecke.”
Polesitter Florian Venturi führte die meisten Runden des Rennens an, während Sörensen, Castro, Nicholas Risitano und Maggi sich um den zweiten Platz stritten. Nach dem Restart in Runde 24 musste der Franzose seine Hoffnungen auf den Sieg aber begraben. Er machte einen Fehler und musste deshalb die Konkurrenten ziehen lassen. Er beendete das Rennen auf dem vierten Platz. Das war sein drittes Top-5-Ergebnis in diesem Jahr.
“Wir hatten gestern einige Probleme, aber heute war es mein Fehler”, so Venturi. “Ich bin sehr enttäuscht, weil ich einen großen Abstand hatte. Ich bin wirklich enttäuscht. Ich habe einfach den Gang verfehlt. Ich war nicht einhundertprozentig konzentriert und ich weiß nicht, warum. Das ist Rennsport. Jetzt freue ich mich einfach auf Most.”
Lokalmatador Scott Jeffs wurde Fünfter. Es war sein erstes NWES Top-5-Ergebnis. Der Brite zeigte in seinem Chevrolet Camaro von Braxx Racing eine solide Leistung. Advait Deodhar brachte sein fünftes Top-10-Resultat der Saison 2019 nach Hause. Der Inder sicherte sich wichtige Punkte in der ELITE 2 Meisterschaft. NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Rookie of the Year 2018, Myatt Snider, war in Großbritannien konstant in den Top 10 unterwegs. Es war sein erstes Rennen auf dem fordernden Indy-Kurs. Der Amerikaner kam zweimal in den Top 10 ins Ziel – im zweiten Rennen wurde er Siebter. Nicholas Risitano erwischte von Platz vier aus einen guten Start und übernahm Position zwei. Bis Runde 13 verteidigte er diesen mit allen Mitteln. Der Italiener verlor dann aber viele Positionen und schaffte es nicht mehr, an der Spitze mitzuhalten. Er kam auf Platz acht über die Ziellinie, vor Alessandro Brigatti und Vittorio Ghirelli, der seine Meisterschaftsführung an Maggi verlor. Ian Eric Waden gewann auf Platz 18 die Legend Trophy Wertung. Es war der zweite Sieg des Finnen in der Meisterschaft für über 40-Jährige für Memphis Racing. Er landete vor Mirco Schultis and Michael Bleekemolen, die das Legend Trophy Podium komplettierten. Arianna Casoli gewann in der Lady Trophy.
Die ELITE 2 Division wird am 29. und 30. Juni am Autodrom Most zurückkehren. Es ist das erste Rennen der NASCAR Whelen Euro Series in Osteuropa und der Tschechischen Republik. Soerensen crowns himself Prince of Brands Hatch
The Dane powers his way to the second consecutive win in the NASCAR GP UK
Lasse Soerensen was the dominant driver in the ELITE 2 Division at the Brands Hatch American SpeedFest. The Dane powered his way past Andre Castro in the closing stages of Round 6 to take his second consecutive win in another spectacular race at the 1.9-kilometer long Indy Circuit. The Dexwet-df1 Racing driver was crowned “Prince of Brands Hatch”.
After cimbing back from last to first in the ELITE 2 Round 5, Soerensen was impressive once again at the wheel of the #66 Chevrolet Camaro. The Aalborg-native started from fifth on the grid and came out the winner at the end of a huge 30-lap battle involving five drivers, which delighted the huge British crowd.
Soerensen passed Andre Castro with a perfect NASCAR-style move in the penultimate lap of the race to grab his third NASCAR Whelen Euro Series career win. Norbert Walchhofer’s Dexwet-df1 Racing was rewarded as the best team of the NASCAR GP UK.
“It was amazing,” said Soerensen. “After qualifying I would have never thought about winning here two times. I thank all the mechanics, all the people at Dexwet-df1 Racing and my sponsor flexlease.nu. They made this great win possible. I went a bit deep on Andre, but I knew that it was my only chance. They told me before that ‘rubbing is racing’. A little bit of contact is fair and that’s what I really love about this championship.”
Andre Castro again saw his dream of winning an ELITE 2 race shattered in the closing stages of the race. The American ended up second for the third time in the 2019 NWES season. After missing a gear in Druids, he couldn’t defend from attack brought by Soerensen at Graham Hill Bend.
“It was kind like all the weekends we had so far,” said Castro. “We end up outside the top places on Saturday and then finish second on Sunday. It’s becoming a routine. I did some really good passes. In the battle for the lead, there was contact but it was fair all the way. I’m happy with the second place here at Brands Hatch.”
Giorgio Maggi grabbed his fourth top-5 and third podium finish of the 2019 season. The
Swiss driver was third in the first half of the race but then lost several positions after a small mistake coming down from Paddock Hill Bend. The Hendriks Motorsport driver is now back on top of the ELITE 2 championship standings. The Rookie Trophy podium mirrored the overall ELITE 2 Round 6 running order.
“It was a really tough race,” said Maggi. “It is so hard here to get the position back. I’m happy that I’m still leading the championship. The race was a lot of fun. Now I’m looking forward to Most. It’s a technical and very flowing track, which I really like.”
Pole sitter Florian Venturi led most of the race while Soerensen, Andre Castro, Nicholas Risitano and Giorgio Maggi furiously fought for second. Once again the Frenchman saw his hopes vanish when a mistake forced him to surrender the lead on restart on lap 24. The Go Fas Racing driver ended up fourth, collecting his third top-5 so far.
“We had some problems yesterday, but today it was my mistake,” said Venturi. “I’m very disappointed as I had a big advantage. I’m really disappointed. I just missed a gear. I was not 100% concentrated, I don’t know why, but that’s racing. Now I’m looking forward to Most.”
Local hero Scott Jeffs ended up fifth, grabbing his first ever career NWES top-5. The Briton put up a solid performance in his #90 Braxx Racing Chevrolet Camaro. Advait Deodhar brought home his fifth top-10 of the 2019 season, scoring important points in the ELITE 2 championship.
2018 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Rookie of the Year Myatt Snider ran consistently in the top-10 in what was his very first time at the challenging Indy Circuit. The American collected his second top-10 of the weekend by finishing seventh.
Nicholas Risitano had a good start from fourth, jumped to second and defended his position with everything he had until lap 13. The Italian then lost several positions and wasn’t able to get back towards the front. He crossed the finish line in eighth ahead of Alessandro Brigatti and Vittorio Ghirelli, who surrendered the championship lead to Maggi.
Ian Eric Waden won the Legend Trophy classification by finishing 18th. It was the second win of the season in the over-40 classification for the Memphis Racing driver. He edged Mirco Schultis and Michael Bleekemolen, who rounded out the Legend Trophy podium. Arianna Casoli grabbed the win in the Lady Trophy.
The ELITE 2 Division will be back in action on June 29-30 at Autodrom Most, in the Czech Republic. The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series will visit Eastern Europe for the first time in its history.
