The US-American drove a flawless final at the virtual Circuit Zolder and brought the ENES title to Austria
The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series (NWES) reacted to the COVID-19 pandemic in the first half of 2020 by launching the EuroNASCAR Esports Series (ENES), a virtual championship for NWES drivers and teams. DF1 Tiger Andre Castro won the championship after eight exciting rounds – including the Prologue in Daytona – and with DF1 Racing he brought the first ENES title ever to Austria.
But there is another good reason for the team to celebrate the championship victory, as the champion will receive 40 points for his car in the real 2020 NWES team classification. The team is delighted with its first title in the 2020 season and is now preparing for the real NWES season kick-off in Vallelunga, Italy, on September 12-13. Due to Castro’s championship win, DF1 Racing will be the team standings leader while traveling to Italy.
“The math was going through my head all the time, especially in the last two weeks,” said Castro after the race. “I figured out early that it didn’t matter what the others would do as long as I ended up on the podium. I tried to score the pole-position to get away from the midfield and eventual troubles. It didn’t work so I started third, but got a decent start and from then on it just worked out fine. It’s great to be the first ENES champion in history and it’s pretty cool to win the championship in my pajamas. There are so many people to thank: my team, my partners and of course the organization for building this great show.”
“We all congratulate our DF1 Tiger Andre on winning the title,” said DF1 Racing’s Head of Motorsports Norbert Walchhofer. “This was the first big win, and I hope it won’t be the last in 2020. We are currently at the Hockenheimring for testing, but nevertheless the whole DF1 team, the drivers and mechanics watched the race together. Andre was very intelligently during the race and deserved to win the title throughout the season. I hope Andre can travel from the USA to Europe soon to go chasing for the title in the real NWES”.
