Ricky Stenhouse Jr. gewinnt das Daytona 500 und startet damit in die 75. NASCAR-Saison.
DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – Beim längsten Daytona 500 in der NASCAR-Geschichte bekam Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Hilfe von unerwarteter Seite und gewann das prestigeträchtigste Rennen des Sports, als ein wilder Big One das Feld in der zweiten Overtime einfror.
Stenhouse und der amtierende Champion der NASCAR Cup Series, Joey Logano, kämpften in Runde 212 um die Führung, als der Kontakt von Aric Almirolas Ford dazu führte, dass sich Travis Pastranas Toyota in Kurve 2 in die Außenwand drehte.
Reifen heulten, Funken flogen und Rauch stieg auf, als die Autos des Titelverteidigers Austin Cindric, Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, AJ Allmendinger, Denny Hamlin, Bubba Wallace und Ryan Blaney in dem chaotischen Big One crashten.
Aber als NASCAR den Knopf drückte, um die Warnlichter einzuschalten, setzte sich Stenhouses Nr. 47 JTG Daugherty Chevrolet vor Loganos Ford durch, dank eines rechtzeitigen Schubses des Drittplatzierten Toyota von Christopher Bell.
NASCAR erklärte Stenhouse zum Gewinner der 65. Auflage der Veranstaltung, eine perfekte Taufe der erneuerten Beziehung zwischen dem Fahrer und Crewchef Mike Kelley, mit dem Stenhouse mehr als ein Jahrzehnt zuvor seine beiden NASCAR Xfinity Series-Meisterschaften gewonnen hatte. Es bescherte dem Hersteller Chevrolet auch seinen 25. Sieg beim Great American Race.
